Emigrant Missionary Cards

The front and back of this card give the names of two emigrant missionaries, one in Hamburg (J.H.W. Sitzmann) and one in New York (Pastor S. Keyl). The card instructs the emigrant to "wear this card upon arrival in Castle Garden in your hat or on your chest" so that the emigrant missionary could recognize you and take to you a place where you could stay and get off to a good start in the new world. (There were people in New York who preyed on recent immigrants and would relieve them of their possessions.) Pastor Keyl's offer of assistance is printed on the card: "German immigrants receive from me at no cost every kind of advice and support." The Lutheran Emigrants' House was one of the predecessor organizations of today's German Seamen's Mission of New York.
